Perma-Fix Expands PFAS Destruction Capabilities to Include Leachate and Wastewater
Perma-Fix Environmental Services is advancing its mission to deliver complete, cost-effective solutions for PFAS remediation with the expansion of its proprietary destruction technology. Building on successful treatment of AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam) waste, the company has adapted its system to also handle PFAS concentrate recovered from leachate and wastewater.
This next-generation capability is already in motion. In June, Perma-Fix received its first commercial batch of these new waste types and is now preparing to treat the material in its full-scale reactor. The technology, while currently centralized at Perma-Fix facilities, is designed with flexibility for future on-site deployment where needed.
What makes this development especially impactful is how it connects with existing water separation technologies such as foam fractionation, reverse osmosis, and resin-based systems. These technologies are commonly used to remove PFAS from large volumes of water, leaving behind a highly concentrated waste stream. Perma-Fix steps in by offering full destruction of the concentrate, the company helps close a critical gap in the PFAS remediation process.
“Separation gets you halfway there,” says Dr. Lou Centofanti, Executive Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. “We provide the destruction piece by permanently breaking down PFAS compounds and reducing the risk of long-term liability for our clients.”
The solution also helps customers manage costs and stay ahead of tightening regulations. With growing pressure from the U.S. EPA and states nationwide, companies and municipalities are looking for reliable ways to meet compliance targets while avoiding the pitfalls of landfilling or incinerating PFAS-laden waste.
Tens of millions of gallons of contaminated water and tons of soil are waiting for viable treatment. By combining its scalable destruction technology with industry partnerships, Perma-Fix is well-positioned to serve a wide range of customers from industrial manufacturers to municipal water systems to federal agencies.
As PFAS concerns continue to grow, Perma-Fix remains focused on innovation, environmental protection, and providing practical solutions that eliminate these persistent contaminants.
